چکیده

Longitudinal fields created in strongly focused laser beams are investigated by near-field optical microscopy. Sharp metallic and dielectric tips are raster scanned through the focus of these modes. It is found that regardless of the tip material, the signal scattered by the tip is a measure for the strength of the local longitudinal field. A surprising contrast reversal is observed between the images obtained with a metallic tip and the images obtained with a dielectric tip. The contrast reversal originates from a non-negligible tip–sample interaction. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1586482#

Electromagnetic spin-orbit interactions via scattering of subwavelength apertures.

Circularly polarized electric fields incident on subwavelength apertures produce near-field phase singularities with phase vorticity +/-1 depending on the polarization handedness. These near-field phase singularities combine with those associated with orbital angular momentum and result in polarization-dependent transmission. We produce arbitrary phase vorticity in the longitudinal component of...

Backward stimulated Raman scattering using one-dimensional relativistic Vlasov code is investigated. For conditions similar to those of Single-Hot-Spot experiments, the growth and saturation of SRS are studied. Analysis of electron distribution function, longitudinal electrostatic fields, transverse electromagnetic fields, and electron density shows that kinetic effects play an important role i...

Jointed Rock Mass Effects on the Seismic Waves Scattering from the Canyon Sites in the Dam's Support

Seismic study of canyon sites has always been one of the important fields of seismic studies because of massive structures such as dams that are built in such sites. Jointed rock mass in rock canyon sites is one of the main site effects that can change the seismic waves. In this research, we studied the influence of this factor on the scattering of seismic waves. To fulfil this goal, we employe...

Theory of Gas Ionization by Intense Electromagnetic Fields

The distribution function of the electrons produced in the interaction between an intense electromagnetic wave and a neutral gas is derived and is shown to be nonequilibrium and anisotropic. By assuming that the time scale of gas ionization is much greater than the field period, it is shown that the electron distribution function formed in microwave and optical discharges has sharp anisotropy a...

Resolving near-field from high order signals of scattering near-field scanning optical microscopy.

The ability of using scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscopy (s-NSOM) to characterize amplitude and phase of optical near fields was investigated. We employ numerical simulations to compute signals scattered by the tip, using a bowtie nano-aperture as the example, and compare with the data obtained from s-NSOM measurements. Through demodulation of higher order harmonic signals, w...
